Radiography Students Shine at Virtual Conferences

This year, Radiography and Medical Imaging students participated in educational opportunities through the American Society of Radiologic Technologists (ASRT) and Nebraska Society of Radiologic Technologists (NSRT), despite restrictions placed on gatherings and traveling due to COVID-19. Clarkson College students received honors and awards for their academic entries in several areas.

Evelyn Ochoa, ASRT Student Leadership Development Program Winner

Each state is allowed to select two students to participate in the ASRT Student Leadership Development Program, and the Nebraska selection committee chose Clarkson College student Evelyn Ochoa (’20) as the 2019 winner. As a recipient, Ochoa has the opportunity to attend the ASRT Educational Symposium and Annual Governance and House of Delegates Meeting in 2021 in Reno, Nevada. Here, she’ll be able to complete a leadership program, network with fellow medical imaging professionals, participate in educational programs and be a part of the governance program at the House of Delegates Meeting.

To apply for the program, Ochoa completed an essay answering the question, “how would you grow professionally from your participation in the Student Leadership Program?” In her essay, she explains, “I will also be surrounded by people who have been involved in different aspects of radiography. This exposure will brighten my knowledge in all the different avenues radiography possesses.”

Ochoa goes on to explain how the opportunity to participate in state and national events will allow her to impact the medical imaging and radiography professions, which will help her as a health care provider as well as her patients.

Research Paper and Exhibit Competition

Each year during the ASRT state conference, the organization hosts academic competitions where students have the opportunity to submit research projects they have completed. In this year’s competition, two Clarkson College students came home with top prizes.

Bailey Bruce (’20) earned second place in the research competition for her work “The Importance of Caring Among Radiographers and Medical Imaging Professionals”. Sydnee Young (’20) earned second place in the exhibit competition for her project, “Diagnosis of Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) in Living Patients”.

Typically, student projects are presented during the state-wide NSRT conference held in spring. Due to COVID-19, this year’s conference was cancelled, but students still had the opportunity to submit their entries .
